Kuroma’s gear and their creative process

Started by former Whigs and current MGMT guitarist Hank Sullivant in 2008, NYC Indie pop band Kuroma has gone through various inceptions before finally settling on their current one, the line-up rounded out by James Richardson and Will Berman of MGMT and Simon O'Connor of Amazing Baby. Considering the incredible background of all musicians involved in this project, we thought many emerging musicians might be interested in knowing a thing or two about how these guys tackle the creative and recording processes. We asked Hank a few questions in this regard.... Click on the title for more

New Pedals: Electro-Harmonix C9, Organ machine

Until recently, the guitarists interested in recreating organ-like sounds had to rely on pitch shifters and whammy effects. Needless to say, although very cool, those effects sound nothing like a real organ. Then Electro Harmonix came out with the B9 Organ Machine... Today, the NYC based company is raising the bar once again with the newly released C9. Where the B9 featured many types of Hammond sounds, the C9 branches out into many other kinds of organs.... The Cry Baby Mini-Wah was born

The "mini-" trend - inaugurated by visionary comedian Mike Myers in his Austin Power series - is becoming somewhat ubiquitous in the guitar pedal world. At our recent SXSW Stompbox Exhibit we had a chance to check out Dunlop's new Cry Baby Mini Wah, which admittedly inspired cuddly feelings - it's a mini-baby, folks!... Click on the title for more

Parlour Tricks and the creative process

Led by Brooklyn chanteuse Lily Cato, Parlour Tricks (previously known as Lily & the Parlour Tricks) play a sophisticated brand of indie pop centered around Lily's magnetic presence and sultry vocals, and enriched by tasteful atmospheric arrangements. The band recently signed with Bar None, which will release their upcoming album ""Broken Hearts/Bones." Since they were in the mood for an interview we asked them a few questions about their creative and recording process. ... Click on the title for more

Oldies but goldies: BBE Mind Bender MB 2 Vibrato/Chorus

I got my BBE MB-2 on the cheap from Musician’s Friend’s “Stupid Deal of the Day.” So while I paid $49 for it, it’s still a value at $149 as you’re getting 2 vintage analog effects for the price of one, and BBE quality. Its got that sexy metal smell (at least until dripped on by months of sweat and beer) that gets me giddy in the same way the warmed-up tubes in my amp do. ... Click on the title for more

Bambara and the recording process

Brooklyn/Athens based trio Bambara plays that niche genre - unknown to most mortals - called "noise rock." You may have more luck getting a reaction from saying the words "Sonic Youth," the NYC band that pioneered it in the late 80s. In their latest album "Dreamviolence," the trio takes things to darker and sometimes even noisier extremes. We asked them a few questions about how it came together. The guys are lucky enough to have a sound engineer in the band, William Brookshire, who recorded the album and answered our questions.... Click on the title for more

Sam Cohen and the Creative Process

After lending his creative juices to (great) bands Apollo Sunshine and Yellowbirds, Brooklyn songwriter, musician and producer Sam Cohen decided it was time to go solo. The Deli has always been a fan of his bands' records, (Yellowbirds' "The Color" was The Deli NYC's Record of the Month back in 2011), with their influences ranging from vintage pop to '60s psychedelia. What we hear from his solo debut "Cool It" doesn't disappoint, so we decided to ask Sam a few questions about his creative process, the making of records, and his relationship with the Muses.... JHS Twin Twelve Channel Drive

The smooth buzzsaw. The cloak of delicious grit surrounding a perfectly balanced warmth. The 1963 Silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve is a classic pawnshop amp now rare and coveted. A favorite of many, including Beck and Jack White, this amp's unique tonal qualities are now accessible at a reasonable sum (and a much smaller package) in pedal form, thanks to the good folks at JHS Pedals of Kansas City, MO, in their new Twin Twelve Channel Drive.... The Dough Rollers and the Recording Process

The Deli believes that if a band can rock properly, and does it for long enough, somebody important is going to take notice at some point. For NYC's The Dough Rollers, that somebody was Jack White, who signed them to his label Third Man Records, under which they released single "Little Lily" in 2013 and - at the end of 2014 - EP "Gone Baby Gone." The band rocks so bad they recently toured with Bob Dylan, Billy Idol and then Queens of the Stone Age... We had a chance to ask the guys in the band a few questions about recording and gear.

Whirlwind The Bomb – try it at the SXSW Stompbox Exhibit 2015

Whirlwind is an American company with a very American story -- founder Michael Laiacona was one of the masterminds behind the original line of MXR pedals, and later left to found his own company, Whirlwind. While arguably best-known for their excellent line of pro audio products, the team at Whirlwind decided to go back to Michael's roots and a few years back, introduced their own versions of the original MXR circuits (Phase 90, Dyna Comp, and Gold Box) in their Rochester Series of pedals, built in-house, in upstate New York....
