Another company further pushing the limits of what guitar pedals are capable of is Industrialelectric, out of Toronto. They have created a unit so bizarre that it must be checked out first hand in order to fully grasp everything that it is capable of.
Appropriately titled, their latest pedal 4046-M is essentially a voltage controlled oscillator. It works by examining the incoming signal and then splitting it into two distinct intervals. The signal is then run through a modulation circuit, which applies a touch - or a ton - of... sonic "chaos" to it. The pedal sports a whopping 14 pots and 3 switches, so there’s no danger of running out of options anytime soon. It can turn your guitar into a looper, a synth, an 8-bit crushing machine, and SO much more.... Click on the title for more
Swedish manufacturer Parasit Studios has created a stellar guitar synthesizer effect in a rather pedalboard-friendly size by the name of ‘Into the Unknown’. Sporting quite a few control parameters, the pedal can do everything from flanger-like modulation, theremin sounds, octave up and down, filter sweeps, and more.... Click on the title for more
Another very cool new pedal that was announced at NAMM ’16 is the Malekko Sneak Attack. A unique take on compression, at its core the Sneak Attack is a very warm-sounding VCA analog compressor that can be used in some inspiring ways, not just completely on or off. While it does standard compression very well, it’s when the pedal is used in other ways that it really shines.... Click on the title for more
As a big fan of reverb effects, I love to see what different stompbox manufacturers are coming up with, and even though I really appreciate "deep" pedals with lots of options for what they can offer, I'm often blown away by simple devices that do just one thing, but do it extremely well. Chuck Pedals has created a solid little unit called the Blue Dream, which belongs to this category.... Click on the title for more
We are always excited when we find out about a new pedal manufacturer based in our hometown, NYC - there aren't many! Enter L0/rez, a north Brooklyn based company owned by engineer/designer Jared Hiller, that just introduced it second creation, the Mona Lisa Overdrive & Oscillation pedal.... British Columbia's SFG Music Supply may be new to the boutique effect pedal scene, but their debut stompbox is a unique and great-sounding overdrive – the Howlerr. A unit with versatile application, the Howlerr boasts a design based around a solitary transistor amplifier fed into the clipping section of the pedal. Said clipping section consists of a trio of germanium diodes and a single silicon diode to provide asymmetrical clipping. What sets this type of clipping apart is that it is more like the kind found in tube amplifiers; “natural” and “smooth”.... Click on the title for more
With the exception of their tremolo, Athens, Georgia's Greer Amps has been focusing on producing great sounding distortion pedals.
They recently announced their first delay pedal – the Black Tiger Delay Device, which marries analog and digital, and prides itself of its smooth and very natural decay. It is designed to sound every bit as warm as the great analog delays of yesteryear, but with some modern updates.... Click on the title for more
There aren't many pedal manufacturers in Brooklyn (the cost of housing certainly doesn't attract small businesses), but at our recent Stompbox Exhibit we had the chance to familiarize with a really interesting boutique one, called Tomkat Pedals. The company seems dedicated to rei-imagining classic fuzz circuits and incorporating some more modern modifications to them. Their newest design is the Bender fuzz, their take on the venerable Sola Tonebender Mk II (considered by many one of the very first guitar pedals).... Click on the title for more
There’s a little bit of Whirlwind on every stage you have played on, not just because the Rochester, NY based manufacturer makes extremely popular break out boxes, cables and other electrical items useful in a live settings, but also because they pretty much invented the DI box as we know it, back in 1979.
But Whirlwind’s engineers have always been interested in stompboxes too, and produce - among others - one of the best optical compressor/limiter for bass, called “OC-Bass.” ... Click on the title for more
