Dilly Dally introduces us to Wounded Paw’s Battering Ram

20160505_123740
Dilly Dally is not a new band in the Toronto scene (they were born in 2009), but it's one of those rare ones that get better with time. 2015 was their year, thanks to their deliciously noisy debut album 'Sore,' a record that aims straight at the hearts of those who can relate to a perfect balance of fuzz, melody and slacking attitude - as well as those who, like us, miss like crazy the early Pixies (in this regard, check out single 'Desire').... Gothic Tropic’s favorite pedal: EQD’s Afterneath

12814240_1067225816652467_1294604515947130999_n[1] Cecilia Della Peruti is a creative force to be reckoned with in the LA scene. Her band Gothic Tropic's musical output could be seen as a permanent effort to defy categorizations: disparate influences like rock, pop, ambient, African melodies and even jazz find a place in her repertoire without affecting its cohesiveness. The lady is also an accomplished guitarist and she's very well versed in stomping on guitar pedals, so we asked her to send us a picture of it.... Featured Pedal: Big Tone Brewery’s Maggie Tremolo/Vibrato

Keith Vonderhulls, the mind behind the beloved Build Your Own Clone idea, has launched another guitar pedal-related company called Big Tone Brewery.  One of their best designs comes in the form of a stereo vibrato – dubbed the Maggie. Designed as an emulation of the legendary Fender Magnatone 280 in mind, the Maggie offers simple controls, and very warm analog tones.... Click on the title for more

The Beaches’ Guitar Pedals

IMG_4669 Power girl band (or girl power band?) The Beaches made quite a splash last year in Toronto. In honor of our upcoming first Toronto Stompbox Exhibit, we asked guitarist Kylie Miller to tell us about her favorite guitar pedals... here's what she had to say! "Here’s my pedal board, pretty simple rig going on. For my main sounds, I use a modded Big Muff and an overdrive (Lexi by DMB Pedals ) which sounds like a Marshall amp. My new favorite pedals on my board are my [EQD] Bit Commander and my 1974 MXR Phase 90 pedal. The Bit Commander is a badass octave fuzz made by EarthQuaker Devices that sounds like a quirky mix of Jack White and Tame Impala. It bulks up any riff or solo. I rarely use the Phaser pedal, but it has a super authentic 70’s psychedelic sound that I love. It can be heard quite distinctly on our track “Zsa Zsa”, off of our second EP, “Heights.”"... New Pedals: Fuzzrocious’ Feed Me EQ/Preamp/Tone Shaper

'feedme_site_mar2016[1] If you think three years of age is too young to work in the family business, Ryan Ratajski of Fuzzrocious Pedals begs to differ. Together with his wife, painter Shannon, he's been designing stompboxes since 2008, letting Kaeden (6) and Raeven (3) paint the “kidpainted” pedals, which are highly recommended for those who enjoy turning knobs blindly.... Digitech unveils the Whammy Ricochet

Whammy-Ricochet-Top_large[1] DigiTech today announced the Whammy Ricochet, a pedal that takes the popular Whammy pitch shifting effect and places it in a box with a small form factor. Instead of using a foot treadle to manipulate pitch bending rate, such as those found on traditional DigiTech Whammy pedals, the Whammy Ricochet bends the pitch of the incoming note at a rate determined by shift and return controls, with pitch selections of 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, Octave, Double Octave, and Octave+Dry,  as well as a toggle to select up or down for the selected pitch.... Featured pedals: Severe by Tone Freak Effects

Severe_Award[1] One of the newer companies on the guitar pedal scene, Tone Freak Effects specializes in stompboxes familiar in design, with a few special tweaks for added versatility. We were intrigued by one of their older models, called Severe, a meaty medium-to-severely-high gain pedal with tones reminiscent of some of the most notorious high gain amplifiers in the world. The standard 3 knob (Gain, Tone, and Level) overdrive taken up a notch, there is a toggle switch that allows for different clipping options – symmetrical, asymmetrical, and no clipping – as well as a bright switch that affects high frequencies on the Tone control. Severe produces a more dynamic sort of overdriven tone, and unlike many other pedals with this much gain on tap it never moves into that heavily-compressed, “rectified” sound. It plays nice with amplifiers of all types and is very well made, equally at home as a rhythm or lead sound. – Brandon Stoner

Cog Effects’ T-16 Analog Octave Pedal

T-16_1.jpg.opt197x383o0,0s197x383[1]UK manufacturer Cog Effects designs great analog pedals for guitarists and bassists, and one of their newest offerings is a take on the classic octave effect. While many newer octave pedals rely on digital processes to achieve their sound, the idea behind the T-16 goes back to the original intentions for the effect- an entirely analog signal path. ... Featured pedal: Dirty Boy Shifty

516d71_3fbc41ad411f4de88be08a033b2dcaa6[1] The California based stompbox manufacturer Dirty Boy Pedals bring an interesting back story to the boutique pedal game. The company was founded by Alex Saraceno - the father of session ace and former Poison guitarist, Blues Saraceno. Dirty Boy aims to create only high end handmade pedals for the most discerning player, and Blues serves as the primary spokesman and demo player. Most of Dirty Boy’s prices range anywhere from $375 to $525, so we are talking about a pro (or Wall Street) budget here, but keep in mind these are small run individually tested boxes....
