6 of the best vintage guitar effect circuits (by Gearphoria)

We love it when our friends at Gearphoria publish these articles about vintage effect designs, this one is about the 6 classic circuits every stompbox geek should know! Attention, some of them were not originally found in pedals, like the Electra distortion (which was inside the guitar) or the Armstrong Green Ringer - an awkward box that would plug directly into your guitar's output.... Send Medicine’s guitar pedals in “July Eyes”

Inspired by the mind expanding sounds of the '60s, Send Medicine began as the solo project for Toronto based singer/songwriter Julian Hacquebard in the summer of 2012. Now based in Los Angeles and expanded to five (and at times six) members , the band, in debut album "Scary Aquarius Daughter" honed a sound that updates psychedelic folk to the current times. Of course, when we hear the word "psychedelic" we immediately think "guitar pedals!" - which is why we asked Julian to tell us about his favorite stompboxes. He decided to focus on the ones used in the recording of the single "July Eyes," streaming below.... Click on the title for more

J.Rockett Audio Designs Alien Echo Delay

The Alien Echo is our offering to achieve vintage analog sounds and worn out tape delay sounds.  The modulation is random and unpredictable similar to a tape delay.  Modulation is also foot switchable for on the fly effect changes.  The tone control only affects the delay signal and depending on where it is set will dictate vintage analog or worn out tape delay sounds.  This is an extremely musical delay that can go from lush, magical long delays to warm country slapback delays.  If you mess with the modulation you can get some pretty crazy sounds which is where we came up with the name.... Orange Kongpressor

The Kongpressor is a five-knob class-A, optical squash machine, going above and beyond the limits of most pedal compressors. Unlike many other compression pedals, the Kongpressor offers up control over all compression parameters including both attack and release. The Kongpressor likes riding up front, before any wahs or fuzzes you might have, so it can grasp the entirety of your pure signal and coat your tone in its velvety transparent squish. Because of its wealth of controls, the Kongpressor contains an almost infinite number of sweet spots, as the Squash, Attack and Release knobs interact extremely well, with tons of different tones between them. The Squash control offers just the right amount of compression to get your mojo working, all while cradling your tone in its big, soft hands. After dialing in the right amount of compression, a global Chime control acts as an active one-band EQ centered on treble frequencies. This active control boosts treble when turned right of center and cuts them when rolled back, for an even-keeled compression sound that sparkles just the way you want it. To combat any perceived volume loss, the Volume knob offers up to 12dB of clean boost. The Kongpressor contains an internal charge pump to double the operating voltage, and accepts up to a 12-volt adapter for a staggering amount of headroom that sits just right in your amp's effects loop. This extra headroom also gives you a subtle tonal kick that bathes your preamp in extra compression. And like all Orange pedals, the Kongpressor is built as tough as its name for a lifetime of service.
