Another very cool new pedal that was announced at NAMM ’16 is the Malekko Sneak Attack. A unique take on compression, at its core the Sneak Attack is a very warm-sounding VCA analog compressor that can be used in some inspiring ways, not just completely on or off. While it does standard compression very well, it’s when the pedal is used in other ways that it really shines.... Click on the title for more
It seems like the new trend for guitar pedals is to go after the quality of high end studio effects... think about what Strymon and Eventide are doing in the stompbox department, or the genius idea JHS had with the Color Box - an analog recreation of a legendary, vintage Neve preamp...... Many legendary pedals were created under the Ross brand, and their designs are still relevant and beloved by both gearheads and studio guys alike. One of their most famous was a compressor, simply called the “R-Comp,” which Gilbert, Arizona's manufacturer Vick Audio managed to recreate faithfully.... Click on the title for more
There’s a little bit of Whirlwind on every stage you have played on, not just because the Rochester, NY based manufacturer makes extremely popular break out boxes, cables and other electrical items useful in a live settings, but also because they pretty much invented the DI box as we know it, back in 1979.
But Whirlwind’s engineers have always been interested in stompboxes too, and produce - among others - one of the best optical compressor/limiter for bass, called “OC-Bass.” ... Click on the title for more
A lot of guitarists are most familiar with Tennessee pedal manufacturer Visual Sound for their popular pedal power line, the 1 Spot, but the manufacturer is first and foremost an effects shop with an emphasis on reliability.
Before we get to the company latest offering, the V3 Route 66 American Overdrive, it bears mentioning that Visual Sound’s V3 line of pedals offers a lifetime warranty that not only includes the purchaser, but it even applies to second or third owners of the pedal. They also design their stomps to withstand 10 million hits with what they call the “forever footswitch”. How’s that for putting your money where your mouth is?... Click on the title for more
Check out this petite beauty from Canada's Fairfield Circuitry. A talented pedal designer, Guillaume Fairfield, puts out a small footprint JFET compressor with lots of twists and turns. The use of 3 position switches for Pad and Ratio will make decision making pretty cut and dry. The big knob is for the final Volume which can be dialed in to bring your signal to the appropriate volume after choosing your flavor of compression. As with all things Fairfield Circuitry, the build quality is sure to be stellar. This looks very exciting. Also, stay tuned for my review of the Randy's Revenge Ring Mod coming soon. -Gus Green... Just in time for NAMM 2013 we have a few new pedals coming from Earthquaker Devices, The Disaster Transport Sr and The Warden Optical Compressor. The Disaster Transport looks interesting mainly due to two independent delays and the claim for lo-fi sounds. I am also intrigued by an Optical Compressor for guitar in the form of a pedal as the term Optical Compression is usually associated with compressors you'd find in a professional recording set up....
