There’s a little bit of Whirlwind on every stage you have played on, not just because the Rochester, NY based manufacturer makes extremely popular break out boxes, cables and other electrical items useful in a live settings, but also because they pretty much invented the DI box as we know it, back in 1979.
But Whirlwind’s engineers have always been interested in stompboxes too, and produce - among others - one of the best optical compressor/limiter for bass, called “OC-Bass.” ... Click on the title for more
Led by Danielle Sullivan's gentle and compassionate voice, Portland's indie pop outfit Wild Ones sounds anything but wild, although they do enjoy experimenting with sounds, which - in a sense - is kind of wild! Their music has the ability to sound at once warmly intimate and somewhat cerebral. This is must be the product of the fusion of the creative minds and talents of Danielle and keyboardist Thomas Himes. We asked them a few questions about their gear and compositional process.... Looper pedals are a must-have for any musician to sketch song ideas or jot down acousmatic sounds. EHX is well known for creating the 16-Second Digital Delay (arguably the first delay/looper pedal), as well as the now-discontinued multi-track workhorse 2880. But their newest looper pedal take things one step further.... Click on the title for more
These days, the name of Boston's guitarist and multi-instrumentalist J Mascis resonates with many musicians based in the NYC borough we also call home (Brooklyn). Since the turn of the decade, our sister site The Deli, a blog exclusively focused on emerging NYC bands, has covered the blossoming of a '90s rock revival scene that in many cases references the legendary guitar sound (and broken melodies) of Mascis' seminal band Dinosaur Jr. His distorted guitar tone and style in records like 'You're Living All Over Me' and 'Green Mind' (which preceded and influenced grunge), sounded absolutely mind-blowing.... Minneapolis transplants Strange Names have brought to NYC a swagger and confidence most of the local hipsters cannot emanate even if they tried. Their style that flirts with the clean, stylized sounds and imagery of the pop of the '80s - heck, their singers kinda looks like a young Simon Le Bon! - but their music, uptempo in a catchy but edgy way, is by no means simple: layers of electric, percussive and electronic sounds intersect with each other (and with the vocals) creating intriguing and often rather complex sonic webs, which must have required a certain amount of production in the studio. We had the opportunity to ask guitarist Francis Ximenez where all these sounds - and the band's inspiration - come from.... Click on the title for more
Considered one of the quintessential guitar effects, the Uni-Vibe has had a legendary mystique ever since the great Jimi Hendrix added the psychedelic tones it offers to his classic sound. Electro-Harmonix has been making excellent pedals for years, and it's well-known for designing great modulation pedals in particular.... Click on the title for more
Designed to be run in front of your amplifier to achieve maximum fullness, the Banshee Boost/Overdrive from Austin boutique pedal builder ScreaminFX is an interesting design. What sets this pedal apart from other similar boosts is the passive circuitry that adds just the right amount of girth to your sound while enhancing it and allowing it to really shine through in a band setting.... We’re always looking to keep folks informed of new boutique pedal manufacturers as we hear of good new projects catching a bit of positive buzz. The latest stompbox company we would like to highlight is Old Blood Noise Endeavors, which participated in our latest Summer NAMM Stompbox Exhibit and was started by two friends Brady Smith (whom we met when he was at Walrus Audio) and Seth McCarroll.... The two preview singles from Empress Of's upcoming album ('Kitty Kat' and 'Water Water') reveal how the project of Brooklyn's songwriter and producer Lorely Rodriguez is evolving from its dream pop beginnings towards a more experimental sound, closer to the avant-electro sensibility of artists like Bjork and Gang Gang Dance. Since Lorely produces her own music, we thought it would be interesting to ask her a few questions about her favorite gear and creative process.... Click on the title for more
