29 Pedals toki fuzz

The 29 pedals toki fuzz is a rather small, industrial-looking square box that can primarily deliver a variety of warm fuzz tones, but also some clean and insane sounds.

Based on a hybrid design of discrete and IC gain stages, the toki offers a rather simple but unusual interface that provides a host of tonal possibilities.

Two knobs Trim and Gain, allow you to precisely set, respectively, the amount of clean signal hitting the first gain stage, and the amount of gain of that first stage.

So lowering the Trim knob will get you tones in the low gain drive/fuzz territory, while maxing it will produce fuzz results from the full to the extreme, depending on the other settings.

Three 3-way toggles represent the creative core of this circuit. By mixing and matching them you can have a total of 27 different tonal combinations, without even taking into account the variations provided by the two knobs.

Here’s what the toggles do:

  • The rather unusual CMP toggle affects mostly the signal’s tone (we guess through some sort of compression) with higher numbers resulting in darker/warmer sounds.
  • The PAD toggle provides three settings for a pad placed between the circuit’s gain stages (the first one being controlled by the Trim and Gain knobs, and the second by the Gain toggle), delivering a louder and more present sound when it’s off but a more focused fuzz tone in the BR(right) position. ON activates the pad, dimming the incoming signal, which generates a less saturated fuzz tone.
  • The Gain toggle represents, as mentioned, the second discrete gain stage. HI position will deliver full fuzz tones, LO borderline overdrive ones, and BR a treble-boosted gain stage.
