I’ll have to admit that initially I didn’t pay too much attention to the new mini pedals released by NUX, like the NUX Mini SCF. They seemed like the rehashing of Mooer models from the early ’10s. Then I realized something: these little babies are stereo! Did I ever see pedals this size in stereo, particularly at this price tag? Definitely not.
The Mini SFC is a clone of the celebrated TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger, a device by a builder that – incidentally – right now absolutely deserves to have its most precious designs cloned since it’s owned by a company (Behringer) that chose unimaginative cloning as its core business model.
Using DSP-based technology, the SFC delivers 3 types of modulation (Chorus, Flanger and Pitch Modulation), whose sonic character can be controlled through knobs for Speed, Width, and Intensity.
The in and out jack are both TRS that support stereo functionality, while the smart footswitch does also Tap Tempo. A USB connection allows for firmware updates.
Have a listen to this pedal in the video below. We added the Nux Mini SCF to our article about the best Chorus pedals (in mono and stereo).
NUX mini SCF, Builder’s Notes
The mini SCF (SUPER CHORUS Flanger & Pitch Modulation) tributes to TC Electronic’s Stereo Chorus Flanger, one of the best modulation pedals ever made since 1976.
NUX’s modern-tech DSP yields a perfect combination of both worlds: analog and digital. To achieve all of the objectives, our engineers had to develop an algorithm that mimics the principles of BBD chips – the key component of Analog Chorus effects. Quality-grade BBD chips in large mass have become incredibly rare, so this method is not practical for making an affordable analog chorus device.
Using DSP technology, NUX is able to offer a mini-pedal with a contrasting array of chorus tones. Besides that, mini SCF offers wider dynamic range, 9V DC power, smart tap tempo that innovates the origin and gives you more good vibes.
Chorus: A chorus is basically a pitch generator which mixes multiple delay signals. When the multiple delay signals are mixed with the original signal, a soft and wide sounding modulation effect is created.
P.M.: A combination of chorus and pitch vibrato which creates a “light” chorus sound.
FLG: A flanger is based on the same principle as a chorus, although here the signal can be regenerated (like adding feedback on a delay) creating a more distinctive sounding effect.
Mini SCF offers True-bypass and Buffer-bypass (Trails), just hold the footswitch to boot-up the pedal (do not connect USB). The footswitch indicator will show you the bypass status. (While you boot-up the pedal, if the FS indicator flashes “Green”=BF, “Red”=TB.)
Mini but mighty! It also supports Stereo input & output. (Use 1/4” TRS cable, and choose Stereo mode.)
