A masterpiece of “less-is-more” engineering, the LA-2A is famous for its transparent compression and automatic attack/release dynamics. The pedal keeps things as simple as the unit (minus the VU meter, which we miss): a toggle switch lets you choose between Compression and Limiting (a heavier form of compression), while the Gain and Peak knobs work together to determine the audio threshold where the compression starts happening.
A Mix knob lets you reintroduce some clean signal, recreating the old and useful trick pioneered by NYC engineers in the ’70s called parallel compression.
