BOSS RC-300 Loop Pedal – Review

The new Boss RC-300 looping pedal from Boss is like riding an Escalade into a garage filled with Ford Escorts. This much 'foot-power' will turn heads. With its metal chassis, and 21”x9” size; it's a substantial piece of gear on a small stage. But unlike other looping pedals that only allow multiple levels of overdub, the RC-300 is essentially 3x separate loopers in one unit allowing an amazing ability to vary arrangements in real-time. - Read Tim Boyce's full review here.... Pedal News: Mad Professor’s Golden Cello

Pedal and amp manufacturer Mad Professor recently created a new guitar pedal to be sold exclusively through Guitar Center and its subsidiary, Musician’s Friend. Available later this month for $199, the Golden Cello is an Overdrive/Fuzz with a Delay circuit, designed to give you that classic late 70’s/early 80’s lead sound - using only one stompbox. Play it through any decent, clean amp and you’re promised a “sweet cello-like singing fat lead tone with the most luscious open ambient tape delay.”... Click on the title for more

Production Corner – the “Old Telephone” Effect

Review: Way Huge Red Llama MkII

Way Huge’s Red Llama MkII is a simple pedal that does one thing awesomely well: highly musical overdrive/distortion. While the name implies a redesign, it’s more of a second coming. The Red Llama (street $120) is a reissue of what became a highly sought-after pedal after it disappeared in 1999, now resurrected by Dunlop.... Click on the title for more

DIY Pedal Review: Mod Kits DIY Persuader

The Persuader from MOD Kits DIY (available at modkitsdiy.com for about $65) is a U-build-it, starved plate, 12ax7 distortion box kit.  It arrives as a collection of parts to be assembled into a powder-coated purple, pre-drilled Hammond-style cast-aluminum box.  A 16 page assembly manual identifies all the included components, and has a solid, but brief tutorial on soldering.  At the end of the manual are various tear-out drawings to use as guides in the build process.  The step-by-step build instructions were clear, and if you've built a few kits of reasonable complexity, it's fairly straight-forward to build The Persuader.   There were one or two steps in the build I thought were not in ideal order;  I'll address those later in this review.... Lucius and the Recording Process

It's rare to see a band mature as fast as Lucius did. Started as a mellow and rather ordinary duo of female singer songwriters, this project in the last 2 years or so has expanded and grown in unexpected, abnormal yet wonderful ways. Their impressive performance at our Deli NYC B.E.A.F. 2011 event showcased a band that, with a little imagination in the arrangement and performance departments, can take traditional songwriting to an entirely new level. Music fans (and industry) seem to be noticing, since they have started to sell out shows in NYC and Austin during SXSW. The two ladies can write good songs and sing beautifully, and with the help of the two boys in the band, put on a show at once emotional and powerful.... Click on the title for more

Moog Music, Google celebrate Bob Moog’s 78th Birthday

The way we associate facial tissues with Kleenex, MP3 players with the iPod, and search engines with Google, is the way the name Moog relates to electronic synthesizers. May 23rd, 2012 marks the 78th birthday of the late Bob Moog, inventor of the Moog synthesizer and an innovator of electronic music. Quite appropriately, Google and Moog Music are each celebrating the occasion in a fitting way for a man who left such an lasting mark on the music industry. From the Beatles' Abbey Road to Radiohead's OK Computer, along with countless other artists since the 1960's, much of the music you listen to today wouldn't sound the same without the influence of Bob Moog....
