New Pedals: TSVG’s Slow Ride Overdrive/Fuzz

Philly based boutique stompbox manufacturer TSVG just announced the release of the Slow Ride Overdrive/Fuzz, a pedal "designed for endless sustain and gritty yet articulate over driven tones." The pedal will be showcased at the Stompbox exhibit we are organizing at Summer NAMM.  The two unmarked knobs are for gain and volume - or so it seems - while the toggle switch acts as a high end filter.  The down position will allow the full signal to pass, but the up position cuts most of the bass response.   This true bypass effect features AC 128 germanium transistors and Mullard “Tropical Fish” caps throughout.  The Slow Ride is built by hand and sells for $200. ... Laura Stevenson and the Recording Process

With the new album "Wheel", just fresh out of the oven, NYC songwriter Laura Stevenson decided to up the production value, steering away from the lo-fi approach of her previous two albums. She enlisted producer Kevin McMahon, someone whose work she respected immensely and who would, as she put it, “be the perfect set of ears for these songs.” She also brought in Rob Moose on violin and Kelly Pratt to play brass, adding their own layers of depth to the band’s full arrangements. Despite the move to sleeker production, the album retains its organic nature, relying primarily on the resonance of acoustic instruments and the electricity of simply over-driven amplifiers, with its most synthetic moment coming from a Roland organ, an unconscious decision explained as Laura Stevenson and the Cans’ way of “being real, relying on each other’s energy to keep time and just playing the songs like human beings, flaws and all.” ... Pedal Review: Diamond’s Memory Lane Jr.

At $279, Diamond's Memory Lane Jr. is more attainable by most guitarists than its $600 analog big brother, Memory Lane 2. And yet the Memory Lane Jr. has similar features, twice the delay time and it can run off a 9-volt battery. The big difference is that the Memory Lane 2 is all-analog, so you get that great vintage warmth. If you've got the means, you'd better move fast, though: Diamond's mine of NOS Panasonic MN3005 chips is running out, and with it goes the 2. Memory Lane Jr. is the practical choice then, but is it as good? That depends how you feel about digital technology. Memory Lane Jr. digitally records up to 1.2 schumtz-free seconds, whereas Memory Lane 2's analog chip maxes out at half that. Don't worry, though: That crystal-clear digital recording gets the all-analog treatment at the processing stage, preserving that intangible warmth so obsessed over by analog purists.... Production Tips: Recording the banjo

The banjo - this bizarre mutation of a guitar and a snare drum - can be a difficult instrument to record. The main challenge is to find a balance between the very attacky but thumpy sound audible near the center of the head, and the rest of the instrument’s sonic components, which - because of its complex harmonic structure - range from mid lows fundamentals to the top end side of the frequency spectrum.... New Pedals: Source Audio’s Orbital Modulator

US pedal manufacturer
Source Audio is one of the few companies that's been trying in recent years to move the stompbox concept forward rather than... retro.  Their unique Hot Hand technology (basically a motion sensing remote control system) has brought unprecedented control of  pedal parameters directly to the guitarists' hands. Their latest product supporting such technology is  the Soundblox 2 Orbital Mod, a super-compact DSP powered pedal that features 12 modulation effects and a lot of shaping power. Check out the video by the manufacturer below for some spacey delight.... Click on the title for more

Sunglasses and the Recording Process

Blending the complex harmonies of The Beach Boys with the gritty aesthetics of the new millennium's bedroom pop, Sunglasses add a new chapter to the Brooklyn DIY scene - which they recently embraced after moving from Savannah, GA. Whereas most current Brooklyn bands have a tendency to flirt with the decadent, self-indulgent atmospheres of the East Coast and European bands of the '60s and '70s, the duo's debut full length "Wildlife" is a collection of sunny and eclectic pop songs whose melodies quite unexpectedly flirt with jazz and lounge without sounding like either. The background is a kaleidoscopic accumulation of sounds that could be described as brilliantly organized chaos - a production style we also appreciated on Foxygen's latest record, and that can be traced back to the Beck-Animal Collective "influenceology tree" - but a chaos that works with the upbeat songwriting to create a super-fun party atmosphere. ... Celestial Shore and the Recording process

Looking for a change of scenery to work on a new project, multi-instrumentalist Sam Owens left Brooklyn for the west coast and what he describes as his “beachy sanctuary”. Setting up in Los Angeles, the result of months of work was California Eden, a dazzling four track set of pretty harmonies, shimmering guitar licks and touches of experimentation that owes much to the sun-kissed city it was recorded in. With friends filling out the sound, Owen’s EP was released under the moniker of Celestial Shore, and as a fully-functioning band, the group are gathering pace, playing several shows and preparing to release their first album.n is the best feeling. I can't wait to put out this full length.... Click on the title for more
