The Universal Audio UAFX Galaxy ’74 Tape Echo is a stereo pedal that encapsulates the essence of the ’70s Roland Tape Echo into an almost compact case, adding extra features like presets, dual stereo effects, tap tempo, a momentary footswitch function, and doubled delay times that allow creating rhythmic subdivisions not possible on the original hardware.
For those wondering how this pedal differs from the other delay in the UAFX line (the Starlight), here’s a quick explanation: unlike the latter, the Galaxy ’74 only has one mode: it emulates a multi-head tape echo, which has the distinct, warm character of vintage delays based on recording the sound to tape. That machine allowed the recording and playback heads to be configured in different ways, which produced subdivisions and rhythmic patterns a regular delay can’t do. While the Starlight has a tape echo-style delay which emulates the color of a tape echo, it can’t host all these functions because its controls and DSP is shared with three other delay modes.
The pedal’s form factor remains faithful to the one seen in other pedals in this line, slightly wide0r than a compact pedal, and the controls include six knobs (three of which, the bottom ones, with alt function) two toggles, and two footswitches.
There’s also an app that allows, among other things, tweaking footswitch settings, managing presets, adjusting real-time effects, and customizing unique oscillation sounds.
Here are the videos of it.
