Brooklyn's post-hardcore/metal quartet Husbandry sounded pretty darn heavy on 2016's debut full length "Fera," but the 2017's "Bad Weeds Never Die" EP takes things to an entirely new level, with metal influences seemingly taking over emo and post-punk ones. Their distorted guitars, in the latest record, are a lot more explosive and dynamic, so we thought we'd ask them a few questions about it.... Click on the title for more
Whirring guitars find pedal heaven among the many changing shrieks and fuzzes that make up NYC psych slackers The Sofas. With a homey name and a flannel-clad, unshaven appearance, you might expect them to be a little softer—but you’d be wrong. The Sofas are loud. Two of the band's members, William Thomas (vox/guitar) and Myles Peterson (bass) recently gave us some insight as to what gear goes into making their distinctive sound.

There’s a certain overarching sweetness that consumes the Denver/New York-based group, Strawberry Runners, but a close listen will reveal a far more complicated sound. The pop-driven arrangements and saccharine melodies support lyrics filled with darkness -a juxtaposition that's at once uplifting and upsetting. The band recently released a new EP entitled "In the Garden, In the Night." Emi Night, the singing-songwriting force behind this project, is very much into stompboxes and kindly answered a few questions.

Poppies have managed to gain a generous following with their introspective, melodic sound. Singer/guitarist May's childlike, delicate vocals, perfectly blend with the band's enigmatic, dreamy instrumentals. We wanted to dig in to the band's sound and story, and fortunately for us May and Ian (guitar) were eager to talk to us a bit about their creative process and the current gear they're using.... While the NYC scene seems to be crawling with psych bands, local rockers Birds tackle the genre in a way that sets them apart from the pack. Though the band is certainly taking cues from music of the past, their angular and distorted sliding guitars and bizarre vocal melodies suggest that they're digging through vinyl crates that have not been thoroughly picked through yet. With such a unique sound, we wanted to ask the band a bit about the driving forces surrounding it, and members Jess and Duane were nice enough to dig into to the stories surrounding their pedals for us. - Olivia Sisinni

You'll be hard pressed to find a current band that sounds more psychedelic than Electric Eye, but the Norwegian group throughout the years has evolved far beyond that genre's mind altering confines. The band incorporates spacey sounds and fuzzy drones paired against a slick classic rock aesthetic. With those thick, textured, DELICIOUS sounds, how could we resist the temptation to ask them about the gear they used behind the scenes? Guitarist Øystein Braut was kind enough to give us the rundown on his impressively loaded, and yet compact board. - Olivia Sisinni

Philly and NYC-based Field Mouse have been known for their dreamy, shoegazey tunes, but while their hook filled songwriting is still on full display on their latest album, "Episodic," the five-piece's sound has evolved in a punchier direction, which is a bit more barefaced, and less shrouded by layers of fuzz and noise. We recently spoke to the band about the tonal shift, and what kind of gear goes into the making of their music.... Click on the title for more
If you understand music from a technical and creative angle, Brooklyn/Long Island duo Bangladeafy will, in all likelihood, blow your mind. We praised them enough already in our sister blog The Deli (they placed 2nd in our Best of NYC 2017 Yearly Poll for emerging artists, and their 2016 album was our NYC Record of the Month in September of 2016). If you don't know them, enjoy this little example of their instrumental prowess.... Click on the title for more
