The pedals of Electric Eye’s Øystein Braut – in 2017

You'll be hard pressed to find a current band that sounds more psychedelic than Electric Eye, but the Norwegian group throughout the years has evolved far beyond that genre's mind altering confines. The band incorporates spacey sounds and fuzzy drones paired against a slick classic rock aesthetic. With those thick, textured, DELICIOUS sounds, how could we resist the temptation to ask them about the gear they used behind the scenes? Guitarist Øystein Braut was kind enough to give us the rundown on his impressively loaded, and yet compact board. - Olivia Sisinni

6 of the best vintage guitar effect circuits (by Gearphoria)

We love it when our friends at Gearphoria publish these articles about vintage effect designs, this one is about the 6 classic circuits every stompbox geek should know! Attention, some of them were not originally found in pedals, like the Electra distortion (which was inside the guitar) or the Armstrong Green Ringer - an awkward box that would plug directly into your guitar's output.... Delicate Steve’s Effect Pedals

13729196_1256187777755386_8999857685950939057_n[1] If music is language, Delicate Steve's mother tongue is electric guitar - with an assorted stompbox accent. Few contemporary guitarists master the six strings' vocabulary the way he does, unafraid as he is to experiment with tone, effects, and parts. Edgy and forward looking artists like Paul Simon to tUnE-yArDs, Mac DeMarco, Dr. Dog, Lee Ranaldo and Built to Spill, realized that, asking Steve Marion to play or record with them. The NJ based musician made ears turn in 2011-2012 with two instrumental records ('Wondervisions' and 'Positive Force') that showcased his imaginative, world music infused compositions. After a lot of touring, and a live album dated 2015, Delicate Steve is about to return with his third full length, entitled 'This is Steve' and scheduled for a January 27 release on Anti Records.... Shana Falana’s Pedals and Creative Process

1150346_240427246105169_805809667_n[1] After perfecting their nuanced sound via touring and single releases, the shoegaze duo, Shana Falana, impressed critics with a 2015 debut LP titled Set Your Lightning Fire Free. Follow-up album, Here Comes the Wave is scheduled for a fall release later this year. The band's sound hits all the right sensory marks dealing in positive wonderment and a sense of discovery. Vocals, as sung by singer/guitarist Shana, soar over chiming guitars and tom-tom drums, all of which keep pace with affected, drone-y guitars. Here's Shana to re-cap the techie and creative side of things.... Click on the title for more

Jenny Tuite’s (of Dirty Dishes) favorite stompboxes

Dirty-Dishes Noise is not a stranger in NYC, whether you are referring to the city's ambient sound or its musical counterpart, which is - more often than not - generated by distorted guitars and fuzz pedals. Guitarist and vocalist Jenny Tuite's band Dirty Dishes inserts itself in this noise rock tradition, which gave us unforgettably turbulent recordings by bands like the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and A Place To Bury Strangers. It turns out Jenny is borderline obsessed with stompboxes, and had no problem sharing with us some effect related tricks she does when playing.... Click on the title for more

oullaw[1] Outlaw Effects just announced the introduction of four new pedals - and hey! Featured pedals: Severe by Tone Freak Effects

Severe_Award[1] One of the newer companies on the guitar pedal scene, Tone Freak Effects specializes in stompboxes familiar in design, with a few special tweaks for added versatility. We were intrigued by one of their older models, called Severe, a meaty medium-to-severely-high gain pedal with tones reminiscent of some of the most notorious high gain amplifiers in the world. The standard 3 knob (Gain, Tone, and Level) overdrive taken up a notch, there is a toggle switch that allows for different clipping options – symmetrical, asymmetrical, and no clipping – as well as a bright switch that affects high frequencies on the Tone control. Severe produces a more dynamic sort of overdriven tone, and unlike many other pedals with this much gain on tap it never moves into that heavily-compressed, “rectified” sound. It plays nice with amplifiers of all types and is very well made, equally at home as a rhythm or lead sound. – Brandon Stoner ... Click on the title for more

A Urei 1176 on your board? Origin Effects’ Cali76 Compressor

76-C_1247[1] It seems like the new trend for guitar pedals is to go after the quality of high end studio effects... think about what Strymon and Eventide are doing in the stompbox department, or the genius idea JHS had with the Color Box - an analog recreation of a legendary, vintage Neve preamp...... Salt Cathedral and the creative process

sc_press_photo_2%[1]

If you like the idea of parallel worlds, you should immerse yourself in the music of Brooklyn's (via Colombia) duo Salt Cathedral. Their gently impressionistic arrangements and celestial atmospheres, combined with Juliana Ronderos' angelic voice and melodies, might transport you to the closest thing to the seventh heaven you've ever experienced - or at least a dancey version of it. We asked Juliana a few questions about the band's creative process.... Click on the title for more

New Pedals: Matthews Effects Conductor Tremolo

conductor-1[1]Eastern Washington based manufacturer Matthews Effects has created a new spin on one of the most popular effect in music history: the tremolo. The controls for the Conductor are where the pedal really shines with its unique versatility. The depth knob, capable of quite a wide range, is the only “standard” tremolo control. Speed/rate controls are done via the tap-tempo switch and the Div (for "division") knob, which combined allow you to fine tune your tempo to a t.... Click on the title for more
