Tone coneusseurs, rejoice! A new Pettyjohn Electronics pedal is here, it’s called Edge, and it’s a doozy!
It’s a preamp pedal designed to deliver that magical blend of saturation, harmonic excitement, light compression you get from a tube amp at the edge of breakup.
It can reach higher gain overdrive at higher settings, without ever squashing your tone thanks to its high overhead warranted by an internal circuit running at 18v. The dual-rail design shared by all the pedals in the company’s CORE series quadruples the headroom over standard 9v pedals.
Another nice touch: the blue LED lights up when the circuit is driven past the edge of breakup, giving a real-time visual of how the circuit is overloading.
On top of that, the company offers two Custom Mod Upgrades on the standard model: An Orange LED for slightly lower headroom and more overdrive, and a Yellow Mod for even lower headroom but tighter low-end and slightly more breakup and chimey harmonic overtones.

There is a sweet spot on almost every tube amp or overdrive pedal most guitarists know well. A magical zone where the circuit goes non-linear and starts to saturate. Harmonics excited by this process make everything sound alive giving the player a unique interactive experience with great tough-sensitive dynamics. The EDGE is a pedal specially designed to explore the sonic magic that happens when a circuit is pushed to the edge of breakup.
The EDGE is voiced to give a rich blend of saturation, harmonic excitement, light compression and then, at max gain, start to fully breakup.
At lower gains, sweet clean tones are easy to come by, in the spirit of several popular vintage preamps, and could easily be used as a slightly colored clean boost. The EDGE has been designed to give a slight bit of vintage character while offering advantages of modern components and design, such as high headroom dual rail power supply (up to 36v of voltage swing!) and musical, sweepable 18 db/octave filters.
What makes the EDGE’s wide sweet spot possible is a set of carefully curated clipping LED’s, specifically chosen for their smooth clipping characteristics and wide saturation curve. The LED’s light up when driven past the edge of breakup and this give us the opportunity to have a real-time visual of how the circuit is overloading. We made this LED visible on top of the pedal, effectively functioning as a visual threshold light for the EDGE of breakup.
CORE Series Simplicity
The CORE Series features a streamlined control set for quickly dialing in killer tones with four knobs to adjust Level, Gain, Lows and Highs.
CORE Series Dual Rail Power
We designed the CORE Series with a dual rail doubling power supply. This design can scale from +/-7v to +/-18v, effecting the headroom, tone and feel of the pedal, achieving up to four times the headroom over standard 9v pedals. The internal supply achieves this by mirroring whatever input voltage you apply via the external power supply and we always encourage people to experiment.
CORE Series Quiet Bypass
Our entire CORE Series features our quiet bypass switching system. It is a true bypass, relay based system for minimum pop when engaging the effect.
