A transparent overdrive that admits it might get fuzzy. That’s refreshing honesty.
Most pedals in this category promise to be nothing but a clean volume lift with maybe a little hair. Then you turn them up and they turn into something else entirely. The Wilson Effects Capstone just tells you upfront: sparkling cleans, gritty drive, and a touch of fuzz if you want it.
The trick is the Mod switch. Left position is stock diode clipping. Classic overdrive response, the kind that’s been on boards since the 90s. Right position engages NOS NPN Germanium transistors. Suddenly, the top end softens, the low end gets squishy, and notes start to bloom into fuzz-adjacent territory. Not a Muff. Not a Fuzz Face. Something in between.
Here’s where it gets weird: Gain interacts with Mid and Bass EQ. Turn up the low end, and you get more drive. Boost the mids and the texture changes. Most overdrives keep EQ and gain separate. The Capstone ties them together like an old amp where every knob affects every other knob.
True bypass. Handmade in Guilford, Indiana. One-year warranty.
For players who want a pedal that cleans up like a small tube amp but can also get a little unruly when pushed, this is a thoughtful, interactive tool. The fuzz thing is a bonus, not a gimmick.
