Most EQ pedals are utility. You cut some mud, boost a frequency, move on. The Origin Effects EQ Deluxe (also spelled EQDELUXE) is not that. It’s based on the Pultec EQP-1a, a passive studio equalizer from the 1950s that engineers still hunt down because it doesn’t just change your tone — it makes everything sound better just by being in the chain.
The famous Pultec Low-End Trick comes from using the Boost and Cut controls on the low band at the same time. That creates a curve that adds weight in the bass while actually improving midrange clarity. It sounds like it shouldn’t work. It does. Hefty bass tones, clearer mids, no mud. Works on guitar too.
The mid band uses inductor-based circuitry with frequencies chosen specifically for bass and guitar. The high band gives you attenuation that stays warm and balanced. Even pushed to extremes, it sounds musical.
Then there’s the saturation. The original Pultec had a push-pull valve makeup amplifier at its output — that’s where a lot of the mojo lives. Origin Effects recreated that stage with solid-state circuitry that delivers controlled, valve-like saturation. It breathes life into your signal the way the old rack units do.
