A Guide to Pedal Modding: How to Mod(ify) Guitar Effects

Emi Nights’ (of Strawberry Runners) pedalboard

There’s a certain overarching sweetness that consumes the Denver/New York-based group, Strawberry Runners, but a close listen will reveal a far more complicated sound. The pop-driven arrangements and saccharine melodies support lyrics filled with darkness -a juxtaposition that's at once uplifting and upsetting. The band recently released a new EP entitled "In the Garden, In the Night." Emi Night, the singing-songwriting force behind this project, is very much into stompboxes and kindly answered a few questions.

Giraffes? Giraffes! – Pedals & Creative Process

girafffes Western MA-based GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES!  is one of those bands crafting deliciously head-spinning math-rock licks so labyrinthine, that you'd imagine it'd be tough for even a full four or five piece band to execute. So, when you hear that their music is the work of solely Joseph Andreoli (guitar) and Kenneth Topham (drums), it's more than a little dizzying to think about how the duo manages to pull it off. Luckily for us, Joesph was kind enough to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the pedals he uses to create GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! expansive sound.... Click on the title for more

Doom Metal Band, King Woman, Talks about Guitar and Bass Pedals

kw-boards If the ground were to one day crack open, and the sounds of Tartarus began to seep out of the earth, I'd like to imagine the hellish cacophony would sound a bit like King Woman. The San Francisco-based four-piece crafts the sort of doom metal that seems to herald the bridging of our dimension and the underworld. Kristina Esfandiari's vocals envelop the band's tracks with the precision of a hushed, siren song, while the band--composed of Colin Gallagher on guitar, Peter Arensdorf on bass and Joey Raygoza on drums--punctuate her ethereal singing with fuzzy, dark soundscapes and angular riffs. On the heels of their soon-to-be-released album, Created in the Image of Suffering, Collin and Peter were kind enough to share their current pedal set ups, and the techniques they used to get the visceral sounds heard on the album.... The Fantastic Plastics’ Gear and Creative Process

318073_511477292208825_1176848818_n[1] It's almost impossible to not be immediately smitten with the Fantastic Plastics. With their bright colors and quirky demeanor, the Brooklyn-based duo re-imagines retro-synth pop for the 21st century. While they're sure to delight nostalgia seekers, the band's catchy, fun tracks have a wide appeal that's sure to draw in even the most discerning Brooklynite. The artists were kind enough to talk a little bit about their expansive synth collection, and just what dimension the Fantastic Plastics come from.... Click on the title for more

Big Thief’s Buck Meek shows us the effects on his pedal board

bt Big Thief's debut album "Masterpiece" has been rocking our world this year - our sister blog named it The Deli NYC's Record of the Month back in July. We asked the band's guitarist Buck Meek (who also has a solo project we recommend checking out) to tell us about the stompboxes he uses when playing with the band, here's his very thorough response!
  1. TC Electronic PolyTune 2,
  2. Ernie Ball volume pedal (modded by JHS for no tone loss, with an active buffer),
  3. Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl (chorus/vibrato, for Magnatone type vibrato),
  4. Zvex Fat Fuzz Factory (octave fuzz),

Shana Falana’s Pedals and Creative Process

1150346_240427246105169_805809667_n[1] After perfecting their nuanced sound via touring and single releases, the shoegaze duo, Shana Falana, impressed critics with a 2015 debut LP titled Set Your Lightning Fire Free. Follow-up album, Here Comes the Wave is scheduled for a fall release later this year. The band's sound hits all the right sensory marks dealing in positive wonderment and a sense of discovery. Vocals, as sung by singer/guitarist Shana, soar over chiming guitars and tom-tom drums, all of which keep pace with affected, drone-y guitars. Here's Shana to re-cap the techie and creative side of things.... Click on the title for more

Jenny Tuite’s (of Dirty Dishes) favorite stompboxes

Dirty-Dishes Noise is not a stranger in NYC, whether you are referring to the city's ambient sound or its musical counterpart, which is - more often than not - generated by distorted guitars and fuzz pedals. Guitarist and vocalist Jenny Tuite's band Dirty Dishes inserts itself in this noise rock tradition, which gave us unforgettably turbulent recordings by bands like the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and A Place To Bury Strangers. It turns out Jenny is borderline obsessed with stompboxes, and had no problem sharing with us some effect related tricks she does when playing.... Click on the title for more

A stompbox inspired delirium: The Stargazer Lillies

JohnCep-Pedals Listening to the brand new album 'Door to the Sun' by PA via New York trio The Stargazer Lillies is an experience comparable to getting lost in the fog. The fog, in this circumstance, is of the aural kind, and created by an over-abundance of guitar effects employed (very unsparingly) by guitarist John Cep, formerly of Soundpool. The man loves stompboxes so much that he carries around to shows not one but TWO boards to fit them all - one of them, as you can see, hosts almost exclusively delay pedals... We were looking forward to get some geek talk out of him, but it turns out his thought process is as deranged as his playing style.... Click on the title for more

Dead Leaf Echo about pedals, guitars and set ups

leaf

Shoegazer is the only musical genre that derives its name from something related to stompboxes: its sound is marked by guitars (and also vocals) so heavily processed to require the use of several pedals during the live setting, which invariably forces musicians to pay a lot of attention to them: that's what they are "gazing" at in most cases, it ain't their pretty shoes. LG and his band Dead Leaf Echo have been gazing at these inspiring, colorful boxes for quite some time now, working in the meantime with producer John Fryer (Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode) and opening for the likes of Psychedelic Furs, A Place To Bury Strangers and legendary British '90s shoegazers Chapterhouse. We thought musicians into the genre would be interested in knowing more about the band's "footware."
