Empress Of’s Gear and Creative Process

Empress-Of[1] The two preview singles from Empress Of's upcoming album ('Kitty Kat' and 'Water Water') reveal how the project of Brooklyn's songwriter and producer Lorely Rodriguez is evolving from its dream pop beginnings towards a more experimental sound, closer to the avant-electro sensibility of artists like Bjork and Gang Gang Dance. Since Lorely produces her own music, we thought it would be interesting to ask her a few questions about her favorite gear and creative process.... Click on the title for more

Ava Luna’s Gear and Creative Process

Ava-Luna-live-CMJ[1]

Active since the late aughts, indie collective Ava Luna precipitated NYC's soul revival of the 2010s. From that hub of DIY creativity that is Bushwick's Silent Barn, the band's fourth LP, Infinite House, continues their homage to variety and experimentation. Atonal guitars undulate behind doo-wop harmonies to form an audio puzzle so mesmerizingly inconceivable that it borders on the sublime. With five uncompromisingly forward-thinking albums and a Deli cover of under their belts, Ava Luna has become an absolute pillar of the Brooklyn underground. The band’s drummer Julien Fader recently sat down to answer a few questions.... Click on the title for more

Elliot Moss: the gear and the creative process

For some songwriters, writing good songs is simply not satisfying enough - and besides, that's not how their creative process works. These musicians feels compelled to wrap those songs in complex arrangements and original sounds, and sometimes arrangement are starting points of what then become songs, in a beautifully bizarre reversed process. In their music, sound design has as much importance as lyrics, chords and structure. 21 years old Elliot Moss belongs to that category, so we thought he might have something interesting to say about his creative process and the gear he loves.... Future Punx and the creative process

Finding inspiration in the dancy, angular post-punk of bands like Devo, the early Stranglers, and even Blondie, Brooklyn's Future Punx have delivered with "I'm So Inspired" (recent Deli NYC Record of the Month) one of the most fun NYC albums of 2014 . We asked guitarist Jake Pepper a few questions about the band's creative process.... Click on the title for more

Howard: Q&A about gear and inspiration

Howard is a Brooklyn band that plays an atmospheric brand of melodic post-rock (although the band on their Facebook page refers to it as "Folktronica"), where gentle textural experiments, synths, samples, varying percussive elements and electric guitars blend effortlessly, guided by the mellow tenor of singer songwriter/producer Howard Feibusch. The band has been active since 2009 in various forms, and lately came to the indie rock audience's attention through single "Money Can't Buy" (streaming), which early in 2015 gathered more than 2 million plays on Spotify in a matter of weeks. We asked Howard Feibusch a few questions hoping to steal some of his secrets.... Click on the title for more

The Dough Rollers and the Recording Process

The Deli believes that if a band can rock properly, and does it for long enough, somebody important is going to take notice at some point. For NYC's The Dough Rollers, that somebody was Jack White, who signed them to his label Third Man Records, under which they released single "Little Lily" in 2013 and - at the end of 2014 - EP "Gone Baby Gone." The band rocks so bad they recently toured with Bob Dylan, Billy Idol and then Queens of the Stone Age... We had a chance to ask the guys in the band a few questions about recording and gear.

Lodro’s gear and DIY recordings

Brooklyn's
Lodro sounds like a band with dangerous, dark intentions. On top of that, bassist and lead singer Lesley Hann (formerly of Friends) has the looks of one of those irresistible Pulp Fiction-style, not to be trusted female characters , while Jeremy Cox's guitar does whatever it takes to sound as sharp and out of control as a rusty knife in the hands of a psychopath. Since he recorded all the band's material (so far) in total DIY fashion, we asked him to shed light on Lodro''s recording habits.... Click on the title for more

Azar Swan: about Gear and Recording

Emerging from the ashes of previous incarnation Religious to Damn, Zorah Atash and Joshua Strawn have spent the last few years creating a compelling new sound and image as Azar Swan. Their recently released full length album “Dance Before the War,” available from Handmade Birds Records, presents a technically modern sound that at times pays homage to the 90’s goth rock canon. We asked Joshua a few questions about the band's recording and creative habits.... Click on the title for more
