Electro-Harmonix has added yet another signature overdrive to their lineup, a transparent design they're colorfully calling the Crayon. The pedal features a unique EQ section that focuses on the high and low frequency ranges, instead of the mid-range which is common with many overdrive pedals.

After a period spent focusing on effects other than distortion, Electro Harmonix in 2013 seems to have shifted its attention back to what made it famous in the early days.
After repackaging their classic 70s Hot Tubes pedal in "nano" format, the NYC based builder has released a brand new distortion called East River Drive, named after the trip New Yorkers take when going from Manhattan to Queens (where the EHX factory is based) or Brooklyn.

Transistorized fuzz came about by accident in 1961 when a faulty circuit in a mixing console caused Grady Martin’s six-string electric bass to distort. Martin was in the studio tracking a session for country singer Marty Robbins. “Don’t Worry” was the tune, and its inclusion of Martin’s fuzzed-out ax made it the first hit record to feature distortion produced by transistors, rather than by a damaged speaker or overdriven tubes....
