The Crazy TTube Circuit While Whale V2 is in all likelihood the most tweakable real spring reverb out there (and by “real” we mean to say that it has actual springs under the hood, hence the size). It has three different spring tanks for varied reverb characters. It also features a tremolo, whose routing order can be before or after the reverb has become more flexible with V2 with the addition of a third harmonic mode, and also independent from the reverb – i.e., they can be played together or separately.
The 3-spring tank in V2 is the same as in V1, but the preamp driving the spring was upgraded, delivering more headroom and a fuller frequency response. The Dwell knob was also updated emulating vintage designs, allowing to dial in the amount of signal going into the spring in ways reminiscent of the vintage tube amps of the ’60s, whether subtler or splashier.
The three spring tanks inside the case consist of a short to medium 2-spring reverb tank offering a milder reverb, a brighter medium to long 2-spring tank typical of blackface amps, a 3-spring reverb tank assembly delivering denses reflections.
The Blend and Mix controls let the player perfectly fine-tune the effect’s amount and color.
As previously mentioned, the Tremolo side of it now features an extra mode, bringing them up to three:
- Opto tremolo
- Tube Bias tremolo
- Harmonic tremolo (new)
V2 also features a remote input jack that lets you control the bypass state of each effect section remotely, while the reverb’s Mix and the tremolo’s Speed can be controlled by either an expression pedal or external tap tempo footswitch.
Many excellent YouTube videographers tackled the Crazy Tube Circuit White Whale, see their videos below. We also added it to our list of the Best Spring Reverb Pedals.
Crazy Tube Circuit White Whale V1
Why do you have to struggle for a digital emulation of two classic effects when you can have the real thing! That’s what we asked ourselves when capturing the concept of White Whale. It features a real 3-spring reverb tank along with controls for dwell, mix, and tone to provide the lushest analog spring reverb you’ll ever find in a pedal of its size (17 x 12,5 x 7,5 cm) to experience the ultimate ride of a wave. Combined with its two selectable modes of an all analog tremolo, opto (black) and bias shifting style (brown), the White Whale is all you’ll ever need to deliver old-school surf tones.
Each effect has its own true bypass function (via the onboard footswitches or remote switching units) so you can have simultaneous or independent operation. With 2 separate expression pedal inputs you can control parameters like reverb mix and tremolo speed. Classic sound with modern flexibility !
