We have all grown to love (or at least like) mini pedals for an effect or another on our board, but one of the format’s obvious limitations isthat it doesn’t give builders much space to be imaginative…
Awol Pedals is a Nashville, TN based company that has embraced the format’s simplicity without giving up on creativity.
They currently have three pedals out: a boost, a fuzz and the recently released Flow, an envelope filter. For the unaware, this a kind of effect also known as “auto-wah,” which consists in a resonant low-pass filter that reacts to your performance by opening up on the dynamic peaks and closing down on the signal’s “valleys, creating a “quacky” effect often heard in funk music.
The pedal’s filter is said to be a mix of vintage and modern sounds, and the lonely knob control the filter producing these tones:
All the way turned up is your classic, bright and funky “auto-wah” sound. With the knob turned all the way down, you get a gentle but full, low-pass filter that’s guaranteed to turn your favorite overdrive tone into a massive fuzz. In between settings are perfect for injecting your tone with that vocoder-like, throaty, iconic rock guitar roar.
The Flow, like the other mini stompboxes in this series, trade the classic rectangular shape of mini-pedals for a square footprint, and simplify the design down to one rather big knob, placed on the right side of the case and therefore adjustable with your foot.
This allows the top of the case to be almost completely empty (with the exclusion of the footswitch, of course), which allows for visually alluring graphics often missing in devices of this size.
Here are the first demos of the Awol Flow Autowah.
Your favorite instrument’s new voice. Flow is an envelope filter pedal with an exotic mix of vintage and modern sounds. Centered around simplicity, the single knob controls the sensitivity and range of the filter.
Flow works with a variety of instruments, stacks well with other pedals, and works differently depending on where it is in your signal chain. It’s very input sensitive, so adjusting your pick attack or guitar’s volume control changes how the filter responds and sounds. The filter retains a distinct tonal character while providing lots of versatility with the range of it’s one-knob control. All the way turned up is your classic, bright and funky “auto-wah” sound.
