Giraffes? Giraffes! – Pedals & Creative Process

girafffes Western MA-based GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES!  is one of those bands crafting deliciously head-spinning math-rock licks so labyrinthine, that you'd imagine it'd be tough for even a full four or five piece band to execute. So, when you hear that their music is the work of solely Joseph Andreoli (guitar) and Kenneth Topham (drums), it's more than a little dizzying to think about how the duo manages to pull it off. Luckily for us, Joesph was kind enough to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the pedals he uses to create GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES! expansive sound.... Click on the title for more

Big Thief’s Buck Meek shows us the effects on his pedal board

bt Big Thief's debut album "Masterpiece" has been rocking our world this year - our sister blog named it The Deli NYC's Record of the Month back in July. We asked the band's guitarist Buck Meek (who also has a solo project we recommend checking out) to tell us about the stompboxes he uses when playing with the band, here's his very thorough response!
  1. TC Electronic PolyTune 2,
  2. Ernie Ball volume pedal (modded by JHS for no tone loss, with an active buffer),
  3. Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl (chorus/vibrato, for Magnatone type vibrato),
  4. Zvex Fat Fuzz Factory (octave fuzz),
  5. ... Click on the title for more

Shana Falana’s Pedals and Creative Process

1150346_240427246105169_805809667_n[1] After perfecting their nuanced sound via touring and single releases, the shoegaze duo, Shana Falana, impressed critics with a 2015 debut LP titled Set Your Lightning Fire Free. Follow-up album, Here Comes the Wave is scheduled for a fall release later this year. The band's sound hits all the right sensory marks dealing in positive wonderment and a sense of discovery. Vocals, as sung by singer/guitarist Shana, soar over chiming guitars and tom-tom drums, all of which keep pace with affected, drone-y guitars. Here's Shana to re-cap the techie and creative side of things.... Click on the title for more

Jessie Clavin of Bleached: favorite stompboxes

bleached Our first thought when we heard "Wednesday Night Melody" - the new single by Los Angeles power pop trio Bleached - was: "This song should be on Rock Band!" - which, if you think about it for a minute or two - is a heck of a compliment. The ladies' new record "Welcome the Worms" showcases an evolution from their early vintage sounding garage-psych-pop, to a more muscular and modern "Alt" sound that, while more produced and punchy, retains the fun of those classic radio friendly punk songs a la' Joan Jett. The distorted guitar is pretty dominant in the band's sound, so were curious to find out what's on the board of the band's guitarist Jessie Clavin - and here's the answer!... Gothic Tropic’s favorite pedal: EQD’s Afterneath

12814240_1067225816652467_1294604515947130999_n[1] Cecilia Della Peruti is a creative force to be reckoned with in the LA scene. Her band Gothic Tropic's musical output could be seen as a permanent effort to defy categorizations: disparate influences like rock, pop, ambient, African melodies and even jazz find a place in her repertoire without affecting its cohesiveness. The lady is also an accomplished guitarist and she's very well versed in stomping on guitar pedals, so we asked her to send us a picture of it.... EZTV Ezra Tenenbaum’s pedalboard (or lack of thereof)

10906056_757800127636060_4373171122646718502_n[1] Ezra Tenenbaum used to write about guitar pedals for this very blog. We were pleasantly surprised to see his new band EZTV signed with super buzzworthy Brooklyn label Captured Tracks (home to notable artist such as Mac DeMarco, DIIV, Widowspeak and Wild Nothing among others). Since we had his email, we thought it was time to ask him a few questions about his favorite pedals...... Click on the title for more
