BITQUEST_1__34121.1431461571.1280.1280[1] Are you old enough to remember the amazing old Sierra video game series from the late '80s and early '90s that included the classics like Kings Quest, Hero’s Quest, Space Quest, and Police Quest? Well, the Canadian husband and wife duo, Ryan and Tanya Clarke, of Dr. Scientist pedals (who by the way have possibly the best website on earth) have managed to conjure up that nostalgic spirit of vintage gamer lore in pedal form with their latest adventure in a box, the BitQuest.... Wicked pedals seen at NAMM: Industrialectric 4046-M

2118404_orig[1] Another company further pushing the limits of what guitar pedals are capable of is Industrialelectric, out of Toronto. They have created a unit so bizarre that it must be checked out first hand in order to fully grasp everything that it is capable of. Appropriately titled, their latest pedal 4046-M is essentially a voltage controlled oscillator. It works by examining the incoming signal and then splitting it into two distinct intervals. The signal is then run through a modulation circuit, which applies a touch - or a ton - of... sonic "chaos" to it. The pedal sports a whopping 14 pots and 3 switches, so there’s no danger of running out of options anytime soon. It can turn your guitar into a looper, a synth, an 8-bit crushing machine, and SO much more.... Click on the title for more

New Pedals: Malekko’s Scrutator bit and sample rate reducer

CNbbDcbUsAAZv4W No guitarist that is or was a Ministry fan can help but being intrigued by Malekko Heavy Industries' stompbox insanity (the company's owner is the band's bassist Paul Barker). Although bit reduction pedals - also called "lo-fi" - are not for all (tone purists in particular), Malekko's latest stompbox Scrutator offers a welcome upgrade to the concept, making it more musical and flexible than ever.... A look at Red Panda Lab’s Bitmap – a bitcrusher pedal

Remember when all recording engineers and pro audio magazines were saying that digital recordings sound awful? Well, we guess that was so long ago that people are starting to actually miss that sound...... Click on the title for more

At the SNAMM Stompbox Exhibit 2013: Holowon and the Tape Soup

The first Stompbox Exhibit at NAMM is next week (Summer NAMM in Nashville!) and we want to take the opportunity to highlight the various boutique manufacturers who will be participating. Holowon is a small company based in Rochester, NY specializing in hand-built effect pedals. All their designs are 100% originals - no clones or copies - and they currently have 12 stompboxes on their "roster." Their effects utilize complete true bypass switching, hand-built point-to-point circuitry and wiring, virtually indestructible construction, and a lifetime warranty.... Guitar Pedal News: Earthquaker Devices’ Disaster Transport SR and Warden Optical Compressor

Just in time for NAMM 2013 we have a few new pedals coming from Earthquaker Devices, The Disaster Transport Sr and The Warden Optical Compressor. The Disaster Transport looks interesting mainly due to two independent delays and the claim for lo-fi sounds. I am also intrigued by an Optical Compressor for guitar in the form of a pedal as  the term Optical Compression is usually associated with compressors you'd find in a professional recording set up.... Pedal Reviews: FXdoctor Super 8-Bit Fuzz

FXdoctor's Super 8-Bit Fuzzdoes one thing well, and that's creating an unpredictable racket that sounds like a Commodore 64 that’s been dunked in acid. It certainly isn't a pedal you'd ever leave on and can’t be incorporated into a formalized song structure because it isn't designed to do the same thing twice. However, if you're looking for an effect that makes your guitar to sound like an ‘80s video game, your search is over. ... Click on the title for more

Level up with these 8 bit guitar pedals

Hearing the term '8 bit audio' probably makes you think of old school arcade games or vintage Nintendo titles, but converting higher quality audio to 8 bits is an effect that can be used to achieve a variety of sounds - including some very cool guitar tones. Reducing the bit depth of a digital audio signal can create sonic artifacts, noise, and distortion that especially affect the overtones of the original audio. While this can certainly produce glitchy, lo-fi, computerized game boy sounds, it can also create crunchy fuzz tones and a wide range of distortion effects. Here's a selection of pedals that use or approximate the sound of 8 bit audio to create their own unique sonic character....
