Howard: Q&A about gear and inspiration

Howard is a Brooklyn band that plays an atmospheric brand of melodic post-rock (although the band on their Facebook page refers to it as "Folktronica"), where gentle textural experiments, synths, samples, varying percussive elements and electric guitars blend effortlessly, guided by the mellow tenor of singer songwriter/producer Howard Feibusch. The band has been active since 2009 in various forms, and lately came to the indie rock audience's attention through single "Money Can't Buy" (streaming), which early in 2015 gathered more than 2 million plays on Spotify in a matter of weeks. The Deli believes that if a band can rock properly, and does it for long enough, somebody important is going to take notice at some point. For NYC's The Dough Rollers, that somebody was Jack White, who signed them to his label Third Man Records, under which they released single "Little Lily" in 2013 and - at the end of 2014 - EP "Gone Baby Gone." The band rocks so bad they recently toured with Bob Dylan, Billy Idol and then Queens of the Stone Age... We had a chance to ask the guys in the band a few questions about recording and gear.

SKATERS excitedly pronounces their name repeatedly on landing on their nondescript website. But once you've seen the pizza-loving video for 'Schemers,' you'll get a better idea for the sense of humor the trio is capable of. Shooting toy guns through confetti-soaked backgrounds, it's obvious this is a band looking for a party. And with this much energy, there can't be one far behind. Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic and Twin Tube Blues

Seymour Duncan’s Twin Tube series are tube powered preamp/overdrive pedals. They come in three flavors: “Blues”, “Classic”, and “Mayhem”! Each of the two-channel pedals are powered by a pair of mil-spec (Military Spec), subminiature (very small), USA-made Phillips-Sylvania® dual triode tubes. According to Duncan, “Too often, inexpensive tube gear runs in “starved plate mode,” where the tubes are not actually helping to create the distortion. The high-plate voltage and 100% vacuum tube signal path allows the tubes to operate at their fullest potential and provide maximum dynamic range. The means you get the most gain and all the smooth tone you expect from a high-quality tube preamp.” I will second that. These pedals have a warmth and clarity I’ve not heard from any other overdrive pedals. I A/B’d the Twin Tube Classic and Twin Tube Blues against several of my favorite overdrive pedals (one was green, one was blue) on several different amps, and the difference was stunning. Both Twin Tubes offer a massive amount of gain, even on the rhythm channel. With a gain and a volume for each channel, you can get anything from a nice clean boost to a super-saturated overdrive. Fryette Amplification to Release Pedal Line in 2011

Fryette Amplification is best known for their hand-built, high quality guitar amps and cabinets, and soon they’ll add a line of pedals to their repertoire. The Sound Effects series of tube-driven pedals will debut with the S.A.S. distortion and Boostassio boost, and should be available for around $199 street. Premier Guitar has the details on the first pedals from Fryette: “Both pedals are true bypass and are powered by a single EF86 pentode tube (not interchangeable with 12AX7 or similar types). Fryette says, “A selected Tung-Sol EF86 is chosen for low microphonics, ultra-quiet operation and extended tube life. The EF86 is powered by a super low-noise high output internal power transformer for maximum dynamic range and bullet-proof reliability.” On the S.A.S. (pictured above): “Waves of distorted mutilation crash against sonic temples as notes radiate into the stratosphere. S.A.S. is possibly the most beautifully ugly distortion device you will ever encounter. Introducing an innovative pentode driven, variable bias tube design, S.A.S can produce anything from slightly edgy clean boost to a full-blown flaming Strat euphoria. 3 new pedals from T-Rex

Danish pedalmaker T-Rex Engineering is kicking off the new year with three new guitar pedals which we are looking forward to meet “in person” at the NAMM convention. Facelifts have been given to their Twister Chorus/Flanger and Reptile Delay pedals, and their affordable Tonebug line now includes a sustainer. The Twister 2 ($369) can be used as either a Chorus or a Flanger, with adjustable depth, rate, and a tone control that dials back the high frequencies. The Regen knob controls the amount of feedback when using the Flanger, and there’s also a gain knob on the side of the unit that allows you to avoid overdrive distortion. A nice feature to have when recording in the studio is the optional stereo output. The unit has had a hardware and software update for this version, which promises a greater tonal range and more vintage-sounding chorus effect. The Reptile 2 Delay ($369) has also been given some new features, namely a tap tempo button and more controls in the ‘flutter’ section.
