You can use the pedal effectively as a sound designer to create full chord sweeps, pitch shifts, envelope filters, echoes, sub-octave harmonized tones, and all sorts of deep sequenced layers. This is one of those pedals that words don’t have much hope alone in doing it justice because the list could go on for days.... Click on the title for more

With a sound both meditative and gothy, Brooklyn duo Surf Rock is Dead pairs sunny melodies to melancholic tinges, ala the Drums, but with a much shoegazier approach, a kind of music that's tightly connected to the use of guitar pedals. Since guitarist Kevin Pariso confided us that he often gets asked about the secrets behind his uber dreamy sound, we just thought we'd give him an opportunity to come clean.... Recreating the sound of classic rock and pop bands from the past is always fun, but probably not high up in most guitarists' list of priorities. That's why we are highlighting this cool series of videos produced by Reverb.com, dedicated to the theme.

After perfecting their nuanced sound via touring and single releases, the shoegaze duo, Shana Falana, impressed critics with a 2015 debut LP titled Set Your Lightning Fire Free. Follow-up album, Here Comes the Wave is scheduled for a fall release later this year. The band's sound hits all the right sensory marks dealing in positive wonderment and a sense of discovery. Vocals, as sung by singer/guitarist Shana, soar over chiming guitars and tom-tom drums, all of which keep pace with affected, drone-y guitars. Leading string manufacturer D'Addario recently launched a new line of guitar strings that proudly features the letters "NY" in its name: NYXL. This is to bring attention to the fact that the Long Island based company, after spending the last few years working towards centralizing every step of their operation, can claim that the new steel wire at the core of the NYXL has been formulated, created, and perfected in the Empire State - not only made in the US, but made in NY!... Shoegazer bands are particularly famous for using this technique, which indeed can help give the guitar a more roomy and open sound (if the mics are spread across the stereo field), but can also be problematic, because of a little mysterious word called “phase”....
