The Catalinbread CBX is the second pedal released this year that does something quite unusual for a stompbox: gated reverb. This is a type of reverb that cuts out the tail end of the effect rather soon, creating an interesting angular reflection. It had its heyday in the '80s when Phil Collins pioneered it on some of his famous pop hits.

The Catalinbread Formula 51 is a new addition to the Portland company's family of Tweed-style amp-in-a-box pedals, already comprising the Formula 5F6, voiced after a '57 Deluxe, and the Formula 55, inspired by the preamp section of the Tweed Deluxe. Guitarists with shoegazing tendencies (for the unaware, "shoegaze" is a musical genre featuring cascades of heavily reverberated distorted guitars) should take a look at the Catalinbread Soft Focus, a reverb + modulation pedal based on some algorithms of the Yamaha FX500, a digital rack effect of the late '80s that was commonly used by the pioneers of that genre.
