Strymon Mobius Multi-Modulation Pedal

Strymon is a company that focuses heavily on... getting it right. They use powerful DSP processing to create pedals that echo and sometimes surpass the most fabulous designs of the past, but with a modern spin of course. I reviewed the TimeLine a while back and gave an extremely detailed and long winded review. Needless to say I loved the pedal and its vast feature set. This time I have the TimeLine's modulation-based counterpart, Mobius, on my bench for review. ... Click on the title for more

WMD Geiger Counter Distortion/Bitcrusher

When I first took a look at the WMD Geiger Counter pedal I thought for sure that the WMD stood for Weapons of Mass Destruction and thought , "OK, these guys are no joke". Come to find that WMD actually stands for William Mathewson Devices and that he is actually... definitely no joke! The company started with pedals like the Geiger Counter Digital Destruction and the Super FatMan Envelope Filter but has since moved into the world of Eurorack Modular Synth modules. Seems to be a common progression for many an eclectic tinkerer. What is the Geiger Counter, you say? From the website it's described as a high gain modern preamp that drives an 8 bit computer, creating sounds which range from nice (tubey overdrive, lofi aliasing, hot gated leads) to total madness (impossible amounts of gain, multiple octave foldover, harsh digital data errors, and piercing sculpted noise). The company makes it a point to stress that this is no DSP modeling pedal.... Click on the title for more

Fairfield Circuitry Randy’s Revenge

Hailing from Hull, Quebec Canada, pedal manufacturer Fairfield Circuitry specializes in edgy stompboxes. The company's founder, Guillaume Fairfield, is a very talented designer and a pleasure to deal with. Check out my review of his Four Eyes Fuzz here. The subject of this review is his highly coveted ring modulator pedal, Randy's Revenge. I will say that I don't always understand his naming scheme, but who cares, he makes great stuff. ... Guitar Pedal Reviews: JAM Dyna-ssoR Compressor/Sustainer

They say that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. For the past two years I've attended NAMM in Anaheim, CA and for two years I've been impressed by the hand-painted designs of Greek company, JAM Pedals. They offer hand-built, hand-painted pedals that use only the best components. They even offer custom paint jobs. Their booth at NAMM is always an eye catcher due to the interesting physical appearance of the hand-painted pedals, and the booth is always packed. So much so that I have never even gotten a chance to talk to anyone from the company.... Click on the title for more

Pedal Reviews: Earthquaker Devices Terminal Fuzz

I get excited every time I get a new pedal in from one of my favorite companies, Earthquaker Devices. This one is no exception. It's a fuzz pedal called the Terminal Fuzz modeled after the tone and vibe of the JAX Fuzz. For those who aren't aware of the JAX fuzz, it's a re-branded Companion Fuzz made by vintage pawn shop superstar, Shin Ei.... Click on the title for more

Pedal News: Electro-Harmonix Tortion JFET Overdrive

The folks at Electro-Harmonix are always working on something. This time it's a new JFET Overdrive unit that they consider to be one of their new flagship devices. This looks to be a well rounded pedal that can achieve all sorts of distorted tones. Under the hood we're looking at a JFET Overdrive with tube-like response and tone, a boost switch with independent Volume and Gain for two-channel flexibility, a 4-way switch Pre-Gain selector with Treble, Middle and Bass tone knobs, as well as an XLR out for use as a stand alone preamp with cab emulation. Exciting stuff! -Gus Green

Pedal Reviews: Earthquaker Devices Pitch Bay

One of two new pedals I spotted at NAMM coming from hot boutique manufacturer Earthquaker Devices is on my bench for review. They call it the Pitch Bay Dirty Polyphonic Harmonizer. This pedal is quite simply a three part harmonizer pedal with a preamp that gets just the right amount dirty and in the perfect way. This combo of features make for a sinister little scorcher that will cut through the mix with polyphonic pride.... Click on the title for more

Pedal Reviews: Digitech JamMan Express XT Looper

Loopers have been around for a while now, dating back to the old days of Les Paul practicing sound on sound techniques with his tape machines in the 50's. Now there are many choices of loop pedals and it seems that any company worth its salt has their own flavor. The Digitech JamMan Express XT is a descendant of Digitech's JamMan series of loopers that have been around since the 90's. This time the US manufacturer aimed to pack all of the necessary functions and then some into the smallest enclosure possible. Did they hit it out of the park? Let's find out....
