The Matthews Effects The Traveler is a three-mode digital, compact reverb pedal by one of the most promising US-based emerging builders with a noteworthy number of releases under its belt.
For this device, simplicity and flexibility (but also affordability, at $129) are the names of the game, although the pedal has a lot more features than immediately apparent, like full Midi compatibility (over 3.5mm TRS), 6 Presets (via Midi), and a momentary Hold function that pushes the feedback settings to the max when the footswitch is held down.
There are just three knobs: Mix, Feedback (reverb length), and the mode-variable “M” one in the center.
The three modes are the following:
- Mod: reverb with modulation, inspired by the company’s Cosmonaut pedal, where the M knob controls the amount of modulation.
- Shimmer: the classic mix of reverb with octave-up, producing an angelic effect, voiced after the builder’s popular Astronomer stompbox. the M knob in this mode sets the amount of pitch-shited signal.
- Vintage: This is a brand new spring reverb algorithm inspired by the ones found in vintage Fender amps. The M knob allows darkening the sound for extra warmth through a lowpass filter.
