Dating back to 1988, the Marshall The Guv’nor was one of the first “amp-in-a-box” pedal ever created, pioneering, at once, a massive trend that lasts to this day of overdrive pedals emulating specific guitar amps, but also a smaller niche inside that trend known as the “Plexi-style overdrives.”
This late ’80s stompbox was popular after it was discontinued in the early ’90s. Since then, an increasing number of players who wanted to add some British-flavored distortion to their rigs rediscovered the Guv’nor or a Plexi-style pedal inspired to it for that task.
This 2023 reissue faithfully recreates the classic sound of the vintage unit, utilizing the same components and delivering the unmistakable smooth and compressed overdrive sound, as you can hear in the demos below.

Marshall The Guvnor, Builder’s Notes
Named after Jim Marshall himself, the original Guv’nor pedal was released in 1988 and set the bar for the generations of distortion pedals that have followed since. This reissue faithfully recreates the classic sound of The Guv’nor, providing a smooth overdriven sound with a touch of compression. The pedal is housed in a casing that is accurately modelled on the original, from the unique shape right down to the individually coloured control knobs.
