Animals Pedal Double Spy Mission is Impossible Filter

It’s always fun to wake up to a new Animals Pedal release, with their adorable graphics and bizarrely interminable names. Today the Japanese stompbox maker unveiled the Double Spy Mission is Impossible Filter.

This is a classic auto-wah (or envelope filter, if you prefer) with controls for Sensitivity and Range, with the latter adjusting the filter’s bandwidth (the resonant mid-frequency) and the former finding the sweet spot for it to react to your playing.

A Mode switch changes the direction of the filter, creating some interesting results in the reverse mode, which “closes” the filter, instead of opening it, when you pick the strings.

Have a listen to it in the demo below.

Animals Pedal Double Spy Mission is Impossible Filter, Builder’s Notes

There are legendary pedals that were born in the 1970s, and the auto wah/auto filter style of pedal was one of the funkiest. At first it was red, later became the very famous green, and later blue (from various companies that we can’t mention due to copyright). Many guitarists and bassists used these pedals as the staple of their funk sound. In particular, many bassists in the USA and UK began to use these pedals to forge new basslines that would resonate around the world. The funk was born, the sounds were legendary, and the people danced.

Animals Pedal feels the funk and brings you the Double Spy Mission is Impossible Filter, an easy-to-use update of the original auto-wah style of sound.

A filter that can follow your playing dynamics and volume is called an envelope filter. Many companies have called this “touch-wah” or “auto-wah”. Many of these pedals can be complicated and difficult to dial in for some players. The Double Spy Mission is Impossible Filter has a very standard control configuration but is easy to use and “set and forget” once you dial it in for your instrument and playing style.

The Double Spy Mission is Impossible Filter also has a standard control configuration, so it may take some getting used to, but the operability and ease of handling the sound are still impressive.

First, adjust the RANGE knob to match the guitar bass, and use FILTER to control the tone. Basically, you can make a sound with just this.

The MODE switch switches the direction in which the filter is applied. The top is up and the bottom is down.

This pedal can be used both as the first auto-wah filter and as a new gear for the funk master.
